Researchers at Curtin University understand that each young person’s experience of pain and their care needs are unique. There is no ‘one size fits all’ for effective, quality musculoskeletal pain care. Young people have told us that they want care that is meaningful, personalised and accessible.
myPAinhealTH (myPATH) is a 5-year research program partnering with young people living with chronic musculoskeletal pain to co-design a digital health solution to support quality personalised pain care in their day-to-day lives.

The myPATH digital health solution aims to support young people in their self-management and clinical care. To assist us in co-designing this digital solution, we want to understand the impact of living with chronic pain on young people’s overall well-being (including physical, emotional/psychological, and social). We also want to understand what young people value in pain care, their care experiences and care preferences, and how young people make care decisions.

This research is funded through the NHMRC Medical Research Future Fund (Project ID: 2016567) under the 2021 Chronic Musculoskeletal Conditions in Children and Adolescents scheme.

Who can participate?

  • Young people (aged 16-24 years),
  • Living in Australia,
  • Currently experiencing chronic musculoskeletal pain. ‘Chronic pain’ means pain that lasts or recurs for more than 3 months, and ‘musculoskeletal pain’ means pain experienced in muscles, bones, joints, and nerves, including low back and pelvic pain. Pain can be local or widespread.

What does the research involve?

Complete a short survey to tell us about your pain and check whether you are eligible for the study.
If you are eligible to participate, we will invite you to take part in one or both of the following:
1) a one-on-one interview (online) exploring pain and mental health (approx. 45 mins).
2) a group discussion (online) and short surveys about your care preferences and what you value in digital health care (approx. 90 mins in total).
Young people aged 16-17 years are invited to have a support person/guardian with them if they wish.
At the end of the study, you will receive a gift voucher for your participation.
