Many people choose to use an Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (IUD) for contraception or other health concerns. Alyra Biotech’s aim is to develop IUD’s that effectively reduce period or pelvic pain. In particular we wish to develop an IUD that reduces pain in the 3 months following insertion of the device.

Alyra Biotech is an Australian company developing new intrauterine contraceptive devices, otherwise known as IUCDs or IUDs, to suit people with different health needs. IUD’s are small plastic devices that are inserted in the uterus, and slowly release either copper or a hormone called levonorgestrel over 3-5 years. Most people experience few problems with them. However, some people experience additional pain in their pelvic region particularly during the first 3 months following insertion.

Our research aims to help understand the usage, benefits and concerns of individuals who have or have considered using an IUD. This information will be used to inform future IUD design and considerations.

Who can participate?

People (18 years and over), who have regular menstrual periods OR who have had regular periods in the past. We are interested in hearing from people who have ever considered having an IUD inserted (even if you chose not to) OR have already used an IUD.

What does the research involve?

Participation involves completing a survey (approx. 20 mins) and asks you about your views and experiences when deciding whether or not to have an intrauterine device inserted in your uterus. If you have chosen not to use an IUD, then we’d like to know what your major concerns were. Why you chose not to. If you’ve already used an IUD, we’d like to ask you about your experience of period or pelvic pain before and after having the IUD inserted.

You will be asked to read the participant information sheet and provide your consent. The survey will ask you for basic information (e.g. age, education, etc.) and ask you questions about your contraceptive choices, and pain experiences. The survey will also ask you whether you would be interested in using a new IUD that reduced your pelvic or period pain by approximately 50% in the 3 months after it was inserted. There are questions around the potential cost of the device, and finally we are interested in hearing your views on what your ideal intrauterine contraceptive device would do for you.
