Laparoscopic surgery is a common method to diagnose and treat endometriosis. This study conducted by the Gynaecology Research and Clinical Evaluation (GRACE) Unit at UNSW aims to investigate recovery outcomes following laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis.

The purpose of this study is to determine the range of recovery outcomes patients may experience following their surgery for endometriosis. This will include general pain levels and first periods following surgery. Other information will include bladder and bowel function following surgery. We will look at the location and severity of endometriosis to see if this is helpful to determining recovery response following surgery. Results will provide information to develop a plain language summary that will inform people having surgery in future what may be considered ‘normal’ and how specific symptoms may improve/decline in the months immediately following surgery. We aim to post this description on EndoZone and other endometriosis community and advocacy group pages.

Who can participate?

People (18-45 years), who are experiencing pain or having trouble getting pregnant or have other symptoms that might suggest endometriosis, who have scheduled surgery for endometriosis prior to March 2024. This may be first surgery for endometriosis, or any subsequent laparoscopy after a previous surgery has confirmed endometriosis.

What is involved?

  • You will be asked some initial questions to see if you are eligible and wish to participate in the study such as your previous medical, surgical and medication history.
  • We will also ask you to complete a survey about your pain, bladder and bowel function and other symptoms.
  • You will have your surgery, your surgical findings will be recorded and you will be discharged from hospital per the direction of your clinical team
  • You will be asked to complete a survey online at 1, 2 and 3 months post-surgery which will be similar to what you completed prior to surgery (they take about 10-20 mins each).
